Chapter 8 focuses on the United States' expansion after the Louisiana Purchase, next moving toward Mexico, what John O'Sullivan declared "our [United States'] manifest destiny." Chapter 8 highlights the continued conflict between the United States, Mexico, and the Republic of Texas during the 1840s. In addition, Chapter 8 discusses the societal criticism of the conflict between the United States and Mexico.
