You may ask yourself, "Why to write?" Writing requires practice, a lot of it. Individuals would not expect to pick up a guitar and play some of the most complicated riffs or pick a basketball and hope to make 90% of their shots. Individuals must consistently practice achieving great skill at a particular activity. You should expect to write well, with consistent practice. I require a solid foundation of writing in all of my classes, according to grade level.

Writing is the primary basis upon which your work, your learning, and your intellect will be judged—in college, in the workplace, and in the community. Writing expresses who you are as a person. Writing is portable and permanent. It makes your thinking visible. Writing helps you move quickly among facts, inferences, and opinions without getting confused—and without confusing your reader. Writing promotes your ability to pose good questions. Writing fosters your ability to explain a complicated position to readers, and to yourself. Writing helps others give you feedback. Writing enables you to refine your ideas when you give others feedback. Writing requires that you anticipate your readers’ needs. Your ability to do so demonstrates your intellectual flexibility and maturity. Writing ideas down preserves them so that you can reflect upon them later. Writing out your ideas permits you to evaluate the adequacy of your argument. Writing stimulates you to extend a line of thought beyond your first impressions or gut responses. Writing helps you understand how truth is established in a given discipline. Writing equips you with the communication and thinking skills you need to participate effectively in democracy. Writing is an essential job skill.

Punctuation is one of the most important aspects of written English, and yet it is one that is taken the most lightly. It is, in fact, this feature of writing that gives meaning to the written words… much like pauses and changes in tones of the voice when speaking. An error in punctuation can convey a completely different meaning to the one that is reading the sentence.
Grammar lays the groundwork for effective communication. Just as an improperly configured telephone wire can cause static during a phone conversation, improper grammar can likewise affect the meaning and clarity of an intended message. Grammatical errors come in many forms, and all can easily confuse and obscure meaning. Some common mistakes are with sentence structure, subject/verb tense, punctuation, spelling, and other basic mechanics and parts of speech. Even something as simple as a misplaced comma can completely change the meaning of a sentence. For example: "Let's eat grandpa" vs. "Let's eat, grandpa." Grammar makes written content more readable and in turn, more interesting. If it is necessary to reword sentences while reading repeatedly, the flow becomes disrupted, and involvement in the story halted.
